Auction activity slumps across Australian capitals

Auction activity is down 20.6 percent across the Australian capitals, with just 1,519 homes scheduled to go under the hammer this week, CoreLogic reports.
In the wake of Tuesday’s RBA announcement raising the cash rate target by 50 basis points, this is the quietest auction week since mid June.
Melbourne leads the way with 626 homes set for auction, down 22.6 percent from the previous week. This is -5.4 percent lower than numbers recorded this time last year. In Sydney, it’s the quietest week since the Easter long weekend, with 521 homes to go under the hammer. This time last year, it was 624 homes.
It’s even quieter in the other capitals, with 154 auctions scheduled for Brisbane, 141 for Adelaide and 70 for Canberra. Perth has just seven auctions on the books while in Tasmania, there are no auctions planned at all.
CoreLogic data reveals that historically, auction activity slows down at the end of July and early August before gaining pace as the spring season approaches. Early numbers suggest a rise in auctions numbers in the coming weeks.

Long-term Sydney residents always had handful of not-so-glamourous nicknames for the building on the corner of Cleveland and Baptist Streets straddling Redfern and Surry Hills, but after a modern rebirth that’s all changed.
